From a geological perspective, clay develops over extended periods as rocks erode and decompose into microscopic mineral particles such as kaolinite. One of its defining characteristics is plasticity—the ability to be shaped and retain its form without cracking.

    Clay body is the essential blend of materials that serves as the foundation for all ceramic objects. Made primarily from clay, feldspar, silica and various additives, it becomes flexible and plastic when wet, making it possible to form a broad range of shapes and structures. Its precise formulation can differ considerably according to the type of ceramic being made, whether earthenware, stoneware or porcelain, with each possessing distinct properties and uses.

    Alongside its main components, clay body can contain non-plastic materials such as sand, grog, calcium carbonate and other substances that enhance the mass’s physical qualities. These additions influence plasticity, resistance to cracking, water retention and behaviour during firing. For instance, adding grog lowers the amount of water needed and improves the strength of the mixture, making shaping easier while decreasing the likelihood of deformation during firing.

    Understanding How to Choose the Right Clay Body for Pottery Projects 

    Selecting the appropriate clay body relies on your forming method, desired strength, and firing temperature. Earthenware is ideal for decorative low-fire projects, stoneware suits functional tableware and vigorous throwing, porcelain is best for delicate or translucent forms, while grogged clays provide stability for large sculptures. However, I have learned that choosing the most suitable clay involves considering many different factors, and I would like to share the knowledge I have gained through my experience. I put together this brief guide to help us learn more about the various types of clay bodies.

    The kind of pottery you plan to make greatly influences which clay body you should select. For instance, certain clay bodies work well for throwing but may be unsuitable for hand-building an outdoor piece. You might decide to work with multiple clay bodies, which is often the most effective approach.

    Clay Body Types: Comparing Earthenware, Stoneware, Porcelain and Ball Clay

    Pottery clay is not a one-size-fits-all material. Each variety behaves differently: some shrink significantly, others dry faster, some require higher firing temperatures, and some are ideal for hand-building while others work best on the wheel. Therefore, choosing the wrong clay can cause cracks and breakage, warping while drying, improper firing temperatures or unwanted textures or surface finishes.  But choosing the right clay will make your project easier, smoother, and far more enjoyable.

    Earthenware

    Earthenware clays occur naturally and can be used “as dug,” meaning that no additional materials are required to make the clay workable and suitable for firing. We generally use commercially supplied, prepared earthenware clay bodies, especially those of us who are not fortunate enough to have nearby clay deposits. Earthenware clays are available in various unfired colours, including red, grey, brown, yellow and green. After firing, most clays become shades of red, off-white or buff. Various additives can be mixed into earthenware clays to create different effects, such as powdered mica to improve resistance to thermal shock or grog to provide greater strength during sculpting.

    Earthenware clays are also recognised for their low firing range, reaching maturity between cones 010–04 (900°C–1060°C). Along with the clay’s non-vitrifying nature, this makes it stronger than stoneware and porcelain, provided it is fired correctly.

    Earthenware clay is a versatile, widely used material recognised for its warm, rich hues and relatively low firing temperatures. It can be used to create dinnerware, decorative plates, ornamental pieces, and ceramic jewellery dishes.

    Stoneware

    This clay has a higher density and is fired at higher temperatures, producing pottery that is strong and long-lasting. It works well for practical objects such as bowls, mugs, and plates. In its wet state, stoneware clay is usually grey and highly plastic. Once fired, its colours can vary from light grey and beige to mid-grey and brown, with the final shades greatly influenced by the firing method.

    Stoneware is generally fired at high temperatures of approximately 1,186°C, or cones 5 to 10. It is called “Stoneware” because the fired pieces share qualities with stone, including a hard, dense surface and a range of natural hues. When fully matured in the kiln, stoneware should bond firmly with its glazes and become impermeable. It is durable and forgiving during both throwing and firing.

    Porcelain

    Recognised for its delicate, translucent quality, porcelain is often used to produce elegant, refined pottery. However, its fine texture and unforgiving nature can make it difficult to handle. The primary ingredients of porcelain are pure kaolin (kaolinite, or china clay), ball clay, feldspar, which serves as a flux, and quartz (silica). Adding different minerals to the porcelain clay body lowers the firing temperature and improves workability. Because it consists of extremely small particles, porcelain remains fluid and can be shaped into very thin, translucent, and fragile forms. However, its limited plasticity means it may crack or warp during drying and firing, since it does not achieve its ideal density until the clay approaches its melting point.

    Ball Clay

    Ball clay is the most plastic type of clay and contains only very small amounts of mineral impurities. It is composed largely of kaolinite and quartz, along with approximately 10–25% mica. Naturally, ball clay is found in extremely thin, mineral-rich layers or deposits. Its colour fades during firing: in the greenware stage, it appears grey, while after firing it develops a light buff shade.

    When fired correctly, it produces a subtle white colour, which makes it highly valued by potters. Because of its excellent plasticity and binding ability, ball clay is commonly used in floor tiles, toilets, basins, vases, and tableware. On its own, however, it is generally too fine and slippery to work with. Although suitable for wheel throwing, it is used primarily in slip casting and as an additive in other clay bodies.

    Key Factors to Consider When Selecting Pottery Clay 

    1. Clay is an organic material and, therefore, may vary according to its source and the availability of particular minerals. Nevertheless, most commercial clays provide a dependable and predictable standard, allowing them to be used confidently for consistent results in most cases. A wide range of clays is available for producing different effects and serving various purposes.
    2. No clay remains identical from one lot to the next, so the properties we have come to rely on in a familiar, dependable clay body may change noticeably over time. Clay suppliers cannot beneficiate materials to the degree necessary in every batch to ensure dependable, consistent results. This applies whether you purchase clay in a box or mix your own clay using bagged materials.
    3. Never presume that descriptions of a clay body or material guarantee that every stated quality will suit your needs. Likewise, do not assume that your supplier conducts continuous testing or even operates a testing laboratory. Although the physical and chemical analysis of a clay offers useful guidelines, that is all they can provide. What does this mean in our studio? Simply that we must use this product carefully, along with the many other materials involved in formulating our clay bodies. Changes in colour are the first clear indication that the material has been altered, and this may negatively affect your clay body.
    4. Commercially prepared moist clays provide a convenient option for purchasing clay when you lack the equipment needed to mix it yourself. This is particularly the case with clays processed in a de-airing pug mill, which greatly reduces the amount of wedging required. Preparing your own clay has some benefits, such as flexibility, since mixing your own clay allows you to follow custom clay body recipes and adjust them as needed.
    5. One of the most effective ways to discover the clay best suited to your needs is to test a range of clay bodies. Purchase individual bags of several varieties that appear -promising. Use each one extensively, testing its limits, and record your observations and impressions on paper and make sample pieces and fire them using a consistent firing schedule. Observe how each clay performs and how it responds to the glazes you apply.

    Firing Temperature, Glaze Compatibility, and Kiln Requirements 

    Firing Range

    The firing temperature of your kiln should be your primary consideration, as it determines the kinds of clay you can work with. Kilns operating at lower temperatures are best suited to earthenware bodies, while those reaching higher temperatures can fire porcelain and stoneware clays. The glaze selected for your clay body must also be compatible with your kiln’s firing temperature.

    Technique and Size

    The kind of work you plan to make is another key consideration when selecting the most suitable clay. Your chosen technique—whether throwing, hand-building, sculpting, or modelling—will influence this decision. Equally important is the intended final use, such as ornamental pieces, interior or exterior work, functional items, or domestic ovenware and tableware.

    Another important consideration is the size of the work you intend to make; larger pieces generally need more heavily grogged clay, while smaller works may benefit from greater plasticity.

    Texture

    The texture of the clay body you intend to create is another important factor when choosing the most suitable clay. The appearance and feel of the ceramic piece you produce are influenced by the amount of grog contained in the clay body. Clay without grog produces a smooth, polished finish, while fine grog provides added strength and stability. Increasing the size and proportion of grog in the clay will create a coarser surface and result in greater strength.

    Glaze Compatibility

    It is essential to test the glaze with your chosen clay. Your kiln’s firing temperature is another important factor when selecting the right clay and a compatible glaze.
