Depending on the kiln’s power, the load size, and the desired peak temperature, this stage usually takes at least 30 minutes.  The goal is a steady, controlled climb to avoid thermal shock, but still rapid enough to be considered “fast-firing.”

    Purpose: To allow the glaze to fully mature and achieve an even melt.

    Duration: Unlike traditional firings, Raku often involves a very short or even non-existent soak.  Once the glaze appears molten and glossy, indicating maturity, the ware is typically ready for removal.  This might be a few seconds to a couple of minutes at most.  Prolonged soaking can lead to glaze run-off or over-firing.

    Removal from Kiln

    Purpose: To transfer the glowing hot ware from the kiln to the reduction chamber.

    Duration: This is a swift, critical moment that typically lasts only 5-15 seconds. Efficiency and safety are paramount here.

    Reduction Chamber Time

    Purpose: To create a smoky, oxygen-deprived environment that chemically alters the glazes and clay, producing metallic lustres, crackle patterns, and carbonisation.

    Duration: This is perhaps the most variable stage, ranging from 5 minutes to 30 minutes or even longer.  The specific duration depends heavily on the desired effect, the type of combustible material used (sawdust, newspaper, leaves, etc), and the tightness of the reduction chamber seal.  Shorter times might yield brighter metallics, while longer times can deepen carbonisation and create more pronounced crackle.

    Cooling

    Purpose: To solidify the glaze and allow the piece to cool safely.

    Duration: This can vary from rapid cooling in the open air (for specific crackle effects) to a more gradual cooling within the sealed reduction chamber.  Once removed from reduction, pieces are often allowed to cool in the open air for 10-30 minutes before handling.  This is when you will be able to clean your pieces to remove stubborn carbon buildup from the reduction chamber.

    • Porosity: More porous clays absorb reduction effects differently.

A hint: blowing on a red-hot raku piece after removing it from the kiln will produce more dramatic crackle effects, but be careful.  It’s hot!

    • Temperature and Wind: Firing on a cold, windy day will necessitate longer heating times and potentially affect cooling rates compared to a warm, still day.

    To achieve consistent and desirable results, ceramists should adhere to these best practices:

    • Prioritise Visual Cues Over Strict Timers: The most reliable indicator for removing ware from the kiln is the appearance of the glaze. It should be fully molten, glossy, and flowing, indicating it has reached maturity.
    • Maintain a Firing Log: Documenting kiln temperature, firing duration, reduction time, and the resulting effects for each firing provides invaluable data for future adjustments. Keep your firing form breakdowns up to date, and you will not regret it later.
    • Experiment Systematically: Vary one factor at a time (e.g., reduction duration, type of combustible) to understand its specific impact on the final outcome.
    • Ensure Safety: Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (heat-resistant gloves, a face shield and heavy clothing) and work in a well-ventilated area. Never wear polyester clothes.
